Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain name extension is the only one meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level names remained online.
